In the wake of a thrilling ACO European Open event in Manchester, the UK Cornhole League (UKCL) has proudly updated its rankings to reflect the outstanding performances witnessed during the singles championships. The refreshed leaderboard is not just a tally of scores—it's a testament to the skill and spirit of UKCL members who competed with vigour and enthusiasm.
In an effort to foster talent and passion for cornhole among the younger crowd, the UK Cornhole League is thrilled to introduce a dedicated Juniors division. All Junior players who have previously competed in UKCL events, including the recent ACO European Junior Division, have been awarded ranking points, which now contribute to a newly established Junior Division rankings table.
This development signifies a pivotal move towards nurturing the cornhole champions of tomorrow. For now, Juniors will still be able to compete in the singles UKCL events, with points earned going towards the Junior rankings table. In time, we hope there are enough Junior players to warrant a dedicated Junior division. Leading the charge in the juniors rankings is Austin Pettitt, with Byron Smith hot on his heels, thanks to his exemplary showing at the ACO European Juniors Open, setting a high standard for up-and-coming players.
The UKCL is not resting on its laurels with just one new addition; another remarkable introduction is the Tier 2 division, slated to debut at the National Championships in July. This inclusive division extends a competitive arena to all players who did not meet the qualifications for the National Championships, ensuring that every throw counts and every player has a chance to shine.
As the anticipation for the National Championships mounts, the current list of qualifiers is a roster of the formidable talent within the UKCL:
- UK Open Champion: Jacob Babich
- Qualifier 1 Champion: Matthew Richardson
- Qualifier 2 Champion: Richard Blanke
- Doubles Champions: To be confirmed
- Qualifier 3: To be confirmed
UKCL operates on a points-based system, with players earning their rank through participation in any UKCL-sanctioned event. However, the illustrious National Championship is an exclusive battlefield for the top 10 players on the order of merit, along with the UK Open winner, qualifier victors, and the doubles champions—a total of 16 elite competitors. Should any player clinch victory in multiple events, additional spots will revert to those next in line on the order of merit table.
For those with eyes on the prize but not in the top ranks, the Tier 2 singles Championship is your arena to compete and make your mark.
UKCL is poised for an exciting future as it lays down the foundations for a vibrant and inclusive community within the sport of cornhole. Stay tuned for the full event list for the 2024/2025 season, and remember, "you have to be in it, to win it!"
