The UK Cornhole League’s Season 3: Qualifier 2 delivered another thrilling day of competition, with Wandsworth Whirlwinds’ Liam McGrath emerging victorious after a hard-fought journey through the bracket.
Earlier in the day, McGrath was defeated by Jonathan Chivers of the Bury Baggers, forcing him to take the tough route back to the final. Meeting Chivers once more, McGrath needed to win twice to claim the title. In a gripping double-dip showdown, McGrath secured the victory, showcasing his grit and skill. This win solidified McGrath’s position at the top of the league standings and ensured his qualification for the National Championship. With his back-to-back wins, an additional spot will now be available for ranked players to qualify for Nationals.
Chivers, the runner-up, competed valiantly and gained a well-deserved two-spot rise in the rankings to third place.
Podium Performers
Rounding out the top three was Charlie Lomax of the Ashby Baggers, who made a strong return to form despite competing while unwell. Lomax’s only losses came at the hands of McGrath - once in the bracket and again in the semi-finals. Along the way, he defeated heavyweights like Geoff Vaughan (7th), Tony Gavan (17th, eliminated by his father-in-law, Jon Wishart), and fourth-place finisher Jared Neusch, who fell to Lomax twice.
Standout Performances
Alistair Pettit, another Ashby Bagger, demonstrated resilience to secure 5th place. His path included victories over his brother Nick Pettit (9th), Joshua Heiser (Joint 13th), and fellow Ashby Bagger Mark Pallet (Joint 7th).
American-born standout Jared Neusch continued to impress. He placed fourth for the second consecutive qualifier, with his only losses coming against Lomax and McGrath. Neusch’s consistent performances saw him rise to the no.2 spot in the league standings.
Daniel ‘Bridesmaid’ Lilley experienced a rare absence from the final, finishing 5th after losses to McGrath and Neusch.
Ladies in Action
The top ladies’ spot was shared between Flo Rooke of the Bury Baggers and Helen Harkness of the Knarsdale Knights. Rooke now holds bragging rights as the top-ranked woman in the league.
Battle of the Podcasters
The much-anticipated clash between ‘Just Board It’ podcasters Joshua Heiser and Graham Davies (Manchester Cornhole Club) didn’t disappoint. In a nail-biting contest, Davies edged out Heiser with a 21-18 victory. Their recap of the event is now available on YouTube and Spotify.
